DIGIFILM SOCIETY at UC Irvine continues its Speaker Series with Vietnamese-American cinematographer Judy Phu. The evening will consist of a filmmaker talk with clips and a Q&A.

FILMMAKER BIO

Judy Phu is a cinematographer. Her family’s journeys as Vietnamese war survivors sparks her curiosity and imagination. She collaborates on stories with an eye for atmosphere, shared cohesive vision, and visual distinction. Judy is a member of the International Cinematographer’s Guild local 600. Her mentor is John S. Bartley, ASC, CSC (THE X-FILES, LOST, BATES MOTEL, THE CW’S NANCY DREW) as part of the ASC Vision program.

Judy is the Director of Photography on HBO’s Emmy nominated feature, ABORTION: STORIES WOMEN TELL, directed by Tracy Droz Tragos. Her first experience visualizing ASL on screen was for SundanceTV’s comedy series THIS CLOSE. This show was a NYTimes Critic pick and the first TV show created by and about deaf people. She just completed photography on a feature set in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Palace of Versailles about food, history and culture with chef Yotom Ottolenghi.

Cinematography has taken Judy to India, Korea, Kenya, Japan, France, the UK, rural Mexico, and across the expansive U.S.. While exploring the nuances of light all over the world, Judy focuses in on the shared intimacy and connections among humans across profound places, languages, and stories.
